How to Get to Imjingak, the Gateway to the Korean DMZ, from Seoul by Public Transportation

Rather than being dragged along on a guided group tour, you are a true traveler who knows how to enjoy the journey—even if it takes a bit more time and effort, trying out local transit and even getting a little lost along the way.

Imjingak is a popular tourist destination in Paju, about 50 km (31 miles) north of Seoul. It serves as the closest public gateway to the Korean DMZ that visitors can reach independently.
Many travelers assume they need to book a DMZ tour in advance through travel platforms like Klook or KKday. However, you can easily visit Imjingak on your own via public transportation without booking these pre-arranged tours. Of course, you’ll still need to book the DMZ Peace Tour in advance—either online or on-site at Imjingak—but it’s quite simple and straightforward. I’ll cover how to do that in my next post. This is the same route many Korean visitors use when traveling to Imjingak, making it a reliable and budget-friendly option.
In this guide, I’ll show you the easiest and most affordable way to get to Imjingak from Seoul.
How to Get to Imjingak by Seoul Metro
Imjingak is the most accessible DMZ destination from Seoul by subway. No matter where you are in Seoul, all you need to do is transfer to the Gyeongui-Jungang Line bound for Munsan.
The Gyeongui-Jungang Line operates both local and express trains. Express trains stop only at major stations and mostly run during peak commuting hours, saving you about 10 to 20 minutes compared to local trains. However, as a traveler, you can simply take whichever comes first. There’s no need to wait specifically for an express train.
Even as a Korean, one thing I find confusing is this Munsan–Imjingang section of the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. If you get off at Imjingang Station, you can reach the DMZ Peace Tour ticket office in just an 800-meter walk.
However, this train doesn’t go straight to Imjingang Station. You have to get off at Munsan Station and transfer to another train on the same line. Trains on the Munsan–Imjingang section run on a very limited timetable, so you must keep this in mind when planning your trip.
How to Transfer at Munsan Station
⭐Important: You Can’t Stay on the Same Train to Imjingang Station
The trip from Munsan to Imjingang Station is just two stops and takes about 10 minutes. However, because trains on this section don’t run very frequently, you should carefully check the timetable before heading out from Seoul.
Even if you miss your transfer at Munsan Station, don’t worry! Imjingang Station is only about 7 km away from Munsan Station, so you can easily take a bus or a taxi instead.
Here is the schedule for the Gyeongui-Jungang Line train from Munsan to Imjingang.

Although it runs twice a day on weekdays, realistically, only the 9:20 AM train works if you consider the tour duration (about 3 hours). Similarly, on weekends and public holidays, only the two morning departures make practical sense for travelers. This is because the return trains back to Munsan also run on a fixed, limited timetable.

If the Gyeongui-Jungang Line train schedule between Munsan and Imjingang doesn’t fit your travel plans, you can take bus 058A or 058B instead. Keep in mind that Munsan is a relatively small town, so buses don’t run nearly as frequently as they do in Seoul. If you plan to take the bus, be sure to bring a good amount of patience!
Exit Munsan Station via Exit 1, cross the street, and go straight for about 100 meters. When you reach the main road, turn left, and you will see the bus stop.Installing the Naver Map app will help you easily check exactly where to get on and off.
058A: This bus has very long intervals between departures. On weekdays, you’ll need to wait about 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes, and on weekends, around 30 minutes to an hour. However, its biggest advantage is that it drops you off right near the DMZ Peace Tour ticket office. The ride takes about 30 minutes. The first bus leaves Munsan Station at 1:20 PM, and the last bus leaves Imjingak at 5:40 PM.
058B: Compared to Bus 058A, this one runs much more frequently—every 20 minutes on weekdays and 30 minutes on weekends. However, it drops you off a bit further away from the DMZ Peace Tour ticket office. After a 15-minute bus ride, you will need to walk for about 15 minutes (around 1 km / 0.6 miles) to get there. The first bus runs at 05:30, and the last one is available until 23:00.
The distance is about 7 km, and the taxi fare will come out to around 10,000 KRW. If you are traveling in a group of about four people, taking a taxi might actually be the best option. Since this is a small town, hailing a taxi on the street might not be easy, but you can easily call one using the Uber or Kakao T app.
