How to Apply for K-ETA: Step-by-Step Guide for Korea Travel

Who Needs to Apply for K-ETA?

K-ETA is an electronic travel authorization for foreign nationals who are eligible to enter South Korea without a visa.

As a general rule, travelers from K-ETA-eligible countries who enter Korea without a visa are required to obtain K-ETA before departure.

If you already have a valid Korean visa and are entering Korea using that visa, you generally do not need to apply for K-ETA separately.

If you are planning a short-term trip to Korea, the easiest way to understand whether you need K-ETA is to check the following:

Is your nationality eligible for visa-free entry to Korea?

If you are not eligible for visa-free entry, you will generally need an appropriate Korean visa rather than K-ETA.

If you are eligible for visa-free entry, are you currently exempt from K-ETA?

Normally, visa-free travelers from K-ETA-eligible countries are required to obtain K-ETA before traveling to Korea.

However, there are exceptions.

The Korean government is currently granting a temporary K-ETA exemption to certain countries and regions until December 31, 2026.

This means that travelers from those temporarily exempt countries and regions can currently enter Korea visa-free without applying for K-ETA.

So the basic rule is:

Visa-free traveler β†’ K-ETA is generally required

Visa-free traveler + temporary exemption β†’ K-ETA is not currently required

Travelers covered by the temporary exemption may still choose to apply for K-ETA. Having a valid K-ETA can provide certain conveniences, such as not having to submit a separate arrival card.

If you are not sure about the difference between K-ETA, a Korean visa, and a Residence Card, I explained them in detail in my previous guide.

If K-ETA is required for your trip, you must receive approval before boarding your flight or ship to Korea.

The simplest way to remember it is:

Visa-free entry + K-ETA required β†’ Apply for K-ETA before traveling to Korea

Visa-free entry + Temporary K-ETA exemption β†’ K-ETA is not currently required

Valid Korean visa β†’ K-ETA is generally not required

What You Need Before Applying for K-ETA

The K-ETA application is completed online, but it is helpful to prepare a few things in advance so you do not have to stop midway to look for your passport or travel details.

Before you begin, prepare the following:

  • A valid passport
  • An image of your passport information page
  • A recent facial photo
  • A valid email address
  • Your mobile phone number
  • Your purpose of visit to Korea
  • The address and phone number of your accommodation in Korea
  • Your planned arrival and departure dates
  • Basic personal information, such as your occupation
  • A payment method that can be used for international online payments

During the K-ETA application, you will be asked to enter information such as your full name in English, nationality, date of birth, passport number, and passport expiration date.

Passport information is especially important. If the information on your application does not match your actual passport, it may cause problems. It is better to keep your passport next to you and enter the information exactly as it appears rather than relying on memory.

You will also need to upload a facial photo. This is separate from the image of your passport information page and should clearly show your face.

It is also a good idea to prepare your accommodation details in Korea in advance. The application asks for information such as your address in Korea, contact information, purpose of visit, and expected entry and departure dates.

If you are staying at a hotel, having the exact hotel address and phone number from your reservation confirmation will make the application process much easier.

Finally, you will need a payment method for the application fee. The official K-ETA website accepts several major payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, and UnionPay.

Once you have everything ready, you can move on to the actual K-ETA application process.

How to Apply for K-ETA: Step-by-Step Guide

You can apply for K-ETA online through the official K-ETA website or the official K-ETA mobile app.

The application process is divided into seven main steps.

You can apply as a registered member, or you can apply without creating an account as a non-member.

There is no difference in the application fee, processing time, or K-ETA validity between members and non-members. However, creating an account can make it easier to check application results, update travel information, and manage multiple applications later.

Step 1. Go to the Official K-ETA Website and Agree to the Terms

First, go to the official K-ETA website and select Apply for K-ETA.

Be careful when searching online because some third-party websites offer to submit K-ETA applications on your behalf while charging much higher service fees.

Make sure you are using the official K-ETA website operated by the Korean government or the official mobile app.

Once you begin the application, review and agree to the terms of use, privacy policy, and other required consent items.

Step 2. Create an Account or Verify Your Email

If you want to apply as a member, create an account and log in.

If you do not want to create an account, you can apply as a non-member. In that case, enter a valid email address and complete the email verification process.

Use an email address that you regularly check, since important information related to your K-ETA application may be sent there.

Step 3. Enter Your Passport Information

Next, enter your passport details.

You will need to upload or scan the passport information page and confirm details such as:

  • Full name in English
  • Gender
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Passport number
  • Passport expiration date

Some information may be entered automatically after scanning or uploading your passport page, but always check that the automatically entered information matches your passport exactly.

Pay particular attention to your name spelling, passport number, and date of birth, as incorrect passport information can cause problems with your application or entry into Korea.

Step 4. Enter Your Personal and Travel Information

After entering your passport information, complete your personal details and information about your trip to Korea.

You may be asked to provide information such as:

  • Occupation
  • Contact information
  • Purpose of your visit
  • Expected arrival date
  • Expected departure date
  • Address in Korea
  • Contact information in Korea
  • Information about accompanying travelers
  • Other details required in the application

You will also need to upload a facial photo.

If you are staying at a hotel or other accommodation, having your reservation confirmation nearby will make it easier to enter the correct address and phone number.

It is better to provide the actual accommodation information rather than entering an approximate or unrelated address.

Step 5. Check All Your Information Carefully

Before making payment, review everything you entered.

Pay special attention to:

  • Passport number
  • Full name in English
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Passport expiration date
  • Address in Korea
  • Contact information
  • Purpose of visit

Submitting false or inaccurate information may result in your K-ETA application being denied or an already approved K-ETA being cancelled.

Before moving on to the payment or submission stage, it is a good idea to compare your application with your passport one more time.

Step 6. Pay the K-ETA Application Fee

Once you have checked all your information, pay the K-ETA application fee.

The basic K-ETA fee is KRW 10,000 per person, plus an additional online payment processing fee.

The application fee is generally non-refundable even if your K-ETA application is denied.

Your application is officially submitted once the payment has been completed successfully.

Step 7. Submit Your Application and Check the Result

After payment, your K-ETA application is submitted for review.

K-ETA applications are generally processed within 72 hours, but processing may take longer when there is a high volume of applications or when additional review is required.

There is also no official express or expedited K-ETA service that guarantees faster approval.

For this reason, it is better to apply well before your departure date rather than waiting until the last minute.

You can check your application result on the K-ETA website. If you applied as a non-member, you may need to verify the email address you used during the application.

Once approved, K-ETA is electronically linked to your passport information, so there is no separate paper permit that you need to collect.

The full application process can be summarized as:

Agree to the terms β†’ Create an account or verify your email β†’ Enter passport information β†’ Enter personal and travel information β†’ Review your application β†’ Pay the fee β†’ Submit your application

K-ETA Fee and Processing Time

The K-ETA application fee is KRW 10,000 per person, which is roughly USD 7–8 depending on the exchange rate. An additional online payment processing fee is charged separately.

You can pay with several major payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, UnionPay, and Alipay+.

If your card is blocked for international online payments, the payment may fail, so it is a good idea to check your card settings before applying.

Once paid, the K-ETA application fee is non-refundable regardless of the result. This means you will not receive a refund even if your application is denied.

K-ETA applications are generally processed within 72 hours.

However, processing may take longer during busy periods or if additional review is required.

There is also no official express or expedited K-ETA service that allows you to pay extra for faster processing.

For that reason, it is better not to wait until the last minute. Apply as early as possible once your travel plans are confirmed.

In short:

Application fee β†’ KRW 10,000 per person + online payment fee

Processing time β†’ Usually within 72 hours

Refund β†’ No, even if the application is denied

Express service β†’ Not available

What to Check After Your K-ETA Is Approved

Once your K-ETA is approved, you can use it for multiple trips to South Korea during its validity period.

Currently, K-ETA is generally valid for three years from the date of approval. However, if your passport expires sooner, your K-ETA will only remain valid until your passport expires. K-ETA applications approved before July 3, 2023 follow the previous two-year validity rule.

You do not need to apply for a new K-ETA every time you visit Korea while your current one is still valid. However, keep in mind that the validity period of your K-ETA is different from the length of stay allowed for each visit. Your permitted stay depends on the visa-free stay period that applies to your nationality.

If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new K-ETA, even if your previous K-ETA has not yet expired. You may also need to reapply if important personal information, such as criminal history or infectious disease-related information, has changed.

On the other hand, you do not need to apply for a new K-ETA simply because your travel plans or accommodation have changed.

If your travel information changes, you should update it through the Update Travel Information section on the official K-ETA website.

Information that may need to be updated includes:

  • Purpose of visit
  • Address in Korea
  • Contact information
  • Expected arrival and departure dates
  • Departure flight information
  • Information about accompanying travelers

If any of these details change after your K-ETA is approved, make sure to update them before your trip.

Another benefit of having a valid K-ETA is that you are generally exempt from submitting an Arrival Card when entering Korea.

Finally, remember that K-ETA approval does not guarantee entry into South Korea. The final decision is made by immigration authorities when you arrive.

In short:

Validity β†’ Usually 3 years

Multiple entries β†’ Yes, during the validity period

New passport β†’ Apply for a new K-ETA

Travel plans changed β†’ Update your travel information

Arrival Card β†’ Generally not required with a valid K-ETA

Entry guaranteed β†’ No

Things to Check Before Submitting Your K-ETA Application

When applying for K-ETA, it is important to make sure that the information you enter matches your actual passport and travel details.

Before making payment and submitting your application, double-check your passport information, personal details, accommodation information in Korea, and purpose of visit.

It is also best to use only the official K-ETA website or official mobile app when applying.

The official K-ETA website is: www.k-eta.go.kr
